Neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the investigation and treatment of disorders of the nervous system. These disorders include epilepsy, migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, dystonia, motor neurone disease, stroke and more common disorders requiring specialist assessment such as headache and dizziness.

Neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the investigation and treatment of disorders of the nervous system, including epilepsy, migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, motor neurone disease, stroke and other disorders requiring specialist assessment such as headache and dizziness.

The Department of Neurology provides clinics in:

  • General neurology including management of Epilepsy but there is no a dedicated epilepsy clinic or epilepsy specialist nurse
  • Neurophysiology
  • Multiple Sclerosis-MS service (including MS specialist nurse)
  • Stroke and transient ischaemic attacks
  • Neuro-rehabilitation
  • Motor neurone disease (MND)
  • Botulinum toxin therapy for spasticity, dystonia, drooling and migraine
  • Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and Movement Disorders – including nurse led Parkinson’s Disease clinics.

Clinics are held in Elmwood Day Unit in Harrogate hospital and also for PD specialist nurse at Ripon Community Hospital and Wetherby.

The Neurology inpatient service (except hyper acute stroke) is based on Granby Ward. Patients requiring specialist neurological rehabilitation may be transferred or directly admitted to Lascelles unit (Neurorehabilitation Unit outside Harrogate hospital).

The Neurology Department also provides also in-patient and outpatient Physiotherapy/Speech therapy/Occupational therapy/Dietetics.

Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis

The specialist Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis nurses work collaboratively with the Consultant Neurologists and patients’ GPs, linking in with the wider multidisciplinary neurology team, which consists of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and dietitians. They aim to provide an easily accessible service providing high quality multidisciplinary care for patients and their family.

Patients are usually referred by their GP. We regret that we are unable to accept self-referrals.
