I qualified in medicine at the University of Manchester in 1981. Following this, I was a House Officer at Manchester Royal Infirmary, and a lecturer in anatomy at the University of Edinburgh. I relocated to Cambridge and was a Senior House Officer in ophthalmology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital between 1983 and 1985. After moving to Yorkshire, I was a Registrar and Senior Registrar in ophthalmology at Leeds General Infirmary, and was then appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust.
